A longtime expert on local Hawaiian culture (as well as an expert tour guide to lesser-known Maui), Pono Fried has his own personal favourites for enjoying authentic Hawaiian cuisine without the tourist hype.
Hana Hou Café
810 Haiku Road, Haiku
+1 808 575 2661
"The ahi tempura rolls at the Hana Hou Café are to die for here,” according to Fried. The café is in the very local town of Haiku, in an old converted pineapple cannery. Tourists never know about it."
The Class Act
310 Ka'ahumanu Avenue, Kahului
+1 808 984 3225
"The Maui Culinary Academy has an adjoining restaurant, The Class Act, which is a real find," says Fried. This eatery has an exhibition kitchen and its highly-acclaimed menu highlights the island's fresh locally-grown produce with dishes like coconut curried vegetable crêpes and gingered tapioca with lilikoi curd. Better yet, the 75-seat establishment has breathtaking ocean views. If you're with a group, ask for the gorgeous 16-seat private dining room.
Tasaka Guri Guri
70 East Ka'ahumanu Avenue, Kahului
+1 808 871 4513
"I love taking clients to Tasaka Guri Guri,” says Fried. “It's been a Maui tradition for generations. They serve Guri Guri—a smooth, creamy sherbet in strawberry and pineapple flavours only, based on a family recipe. Though many tourists have discovered the local treat called ‘shave ice,’ few non-locals would even know about Guri Guri."
