Lovers of green curry, Thai basil and other signature flavours of Thai cuisine may now take their interest one step further thanks to a growing number of hands-on culinary opportunities available to visitors in Bangkok. These cooking classes especially appeal to sophisticated food lovers and other curious travellers seeking a unique Bangkok experience. Learning the techniques involved in Thai cooking means gaining not only a new skill, but also valuable insights into one of the most compelling cultures in southeast Asia.

Classes are offered by many of Bangkok’s premier hotels, as well as by some of the city’s finer restaurants and, of course, cooking schools. The lessons typically include instruction in the selection of ingredients and hands-on cooking demonstrations, during which participants learn how to blend fresh herbs and spices and use traditional utensils such as the pestle and coconut grinder.

The Oriental, Bangkok, which consistently ranks among the top luxury hotels in the world, offers a comprehensive four-day programme of hands-on classes focusing on the art of Thai cooking and the preparation of classic Thai feasts. Upon completion of the programme you will be able to create a host of delectable dishes, from familiar favourites such as spring rolls and Pad Thai to lesser-known delicacies such as sweet mango with sticky rice and stir fried squid with chili jam. Classes are open to all Bangkok visitors as well as to guests of The Oriental, Bangkok, who may arrange packages that include cooking classes and accommodations. Several other upscale Bangkok hotels, including the Peninsula Bangkok, offer cooking courses as well. Contact Centurion Concierge for a complete list and booking inquiries.

Some of the city’s top restaurants also offer classes. The Blue Elephant, which occupies a magnificent mansion, offers daylong classes that begin with a morning trip to the market. The executive chef accompanies the group and assists in the selection of ingredients to be used in the preparation and cooking of a four-course meal. At the conclusion of the class, each culinary creation is served at a grand banquet along with additional Thai dishes.

Another memorable experience awaits at Thai House, where cooking classes include a boat ride to the restaurant and lessons in its open-air kitchen. Contact Centurion Concierge for reservations.
